A violent night in Richmond, Virginia turned deadly early Saturday morning as a mass shooting erupted in the Shockoe Bottom neighborhood, leaving two people dead and seven others injured. Authorities reported that a street fight involving multiple individuals quickly escalated into gunfire, with at least two shooters opening fire before additional gunmen joined the chaos. The deadly incident occurred around 2:47 a.m. on North 18th Street, an area popular for gatherings and nightlife, though police confirmed that bars were already closed at the time.
The fatalities have been identified as Genesis Tamar Jones, 23, from Petersburg, Virginia, and Dominic Antoine Jackson, 42, from Henrico County. Genesis Jones was an innocent bystander, reportedly attending her younger brother’s birthday celebration when she was struck by multiple gunshots. Both victims were pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities recovered more than 50 shell casings and two firearms at the site, though the investigation indicates additional guns may have been involved.
Among the seven wounded, three men and four women were treated at local hospitals, with one male patient listed in life-threatening condition. Witnesses described the gunfire as sounding automatic and closing in rapidly, causing panicked bystanders to dive for cover. Several vehicles in the area were also struck by bullets, and a large number of people fled the scene in the immediate aftermath. Richmond Police have been actively collecting evidence and video from the public to help identify all shooters involved.
Richmond Police Chief Rick Edwards detailed that the violence began with a street fight between two groups, escalating as multiple individuals armed themselves. “Multiple people entered that fight with firearms in hand,” Edwards said, highlighting the prevalence of guns in the city. On average, Richmond police seize over 1,800 firearms annually, demonstrating the ongoing challenges of gun violence in the community.
The mass shooting has sent shockwaves through the city, particularly given that the victims and bystanders were civilians caught in an unprovoked outbreak of violence. Mayor Danny Avula described the event as “absolutely heartbreaking” and expressed sympathy for the families of the victims. He emphasized that such violence does not reflect the values or the way residents want to live in Richmond.
Authorities continue to investigate the incident, with no arrests reported as of Saturday evening. The Richmond Police Department is asking anyone with information, including videos or eyewitness accounts, to come forward to assist in identifying the shooters and bringing justice to those affected. Meanwhile, the community is left grappling with the aftermath of a devastating event that underscores the ongoing struggles with gun violence in the city.
