In Berks County, Pennsylvania, authorities are investigating a deadly single-vehicle crash that claimed the life of 23-year-old Keenan Cryts of Pottsville after a Tesla sedan left the roadway and struck a tree along Bernville Road in the early hours of Sunday morning, a collision that later turned fatal following emergency treatment at a nearby hospital.

Keenan Cryts Dies After Tesla Crashes

According to Pennsylvania State Police, the crash occurred at approximately 1:56 a.m. on May 24, 2026, along State Route 183 (Bernville Road), just north of North 4th Street in Bernville. Investigators say a black Tesla sedan was traveling southbound when it crossed into the northbound lane for reasons still under investigation before leaving the roadway and crashing into a tree.

Emergency responders arrived at the scene shortly after the crash and found both occupants with serious injuries. Keenan Cryts, who was a passenger in the vehicle, suffered critical trauma and was transported to a nearby trauma center for emergency medical care. Despite lifesaving efforts, authorities confirmed that he later died from his injuries at Reading Hospital at approximately 11:19 p.m. that same day.

State Police said the driver, a 23-year-old man from Pottsville whose identity has not been publicly released, is suspected of operating the vehicle under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs at the time of the crash. Officials noted that the driver was wearing a seat belt, while Cryts was reportedly unrestrained during the collision.

Investigators have not yet announced formal charges as the case remains under active review. The Pennsylvania State Police are continuing to gather evidence, analyze toxicology results, and reconstruct the events leading up to the moment the vehicle left the roadway and struck the tree along the rural highway corridor.

The Berks County Coroner’s Office and the Berks County District Attorney’s Office have also joined the investigation as authorities work to determine all contributing factors. Officials say the involvement of multiple agencies reflects the seriousness of the incident and the need for a full review of the circumstances surrounding the fatal crash.

Emergency personnel from local fire and EMS agencies assisted at the scene, where crews worked to secure the area and provide immediate medical attention. The crash temporarily disrupted traffic along Bernville Road as investigators documented roadway evidence and vehicle damage.

As the investigation continues, authorities are reminding drivers of the dangers of impaired driving and the importance of seat belt use, especially in high-speed or rural roadway environments where a single loss of control can quickly become fatal. The death of Keenan Cryts has left family and friends mourning a sudden and devastating loss while officials work to bring clarity to the circumstances surrounding the crash.
