Durham County, North Carolina – On the early morning of Sunday, October 19, 2025, Brijette Basden, a 24-year-old from Kernersville, lost her life in a tragic car accident when her automobile was hit on westbound Interstate 40 close to Page Road in Durham County.

Emergency services arrived at the accident location at approximately 4:45 a.m., finding Basden's Ford Fusion partially halted on the far-left edge of the highway. Her sister, who was nearby, suffered non-life-threatening injuries after being hit by other cars involved in the incident.

Initial investigations suggest that Basden had stopped the vehicle to change drivers with her sister. The car was mostly in a travel lane when a 2003 Toyota Camry, coming from the far-left lane, crashed into the Fusion and subsequently veered into a 2021 Toyota Camry.

The collision was catastrophic for Basden, leading to her being declared dead at the scene. Her sister was taken to a hospital for treatment of injuries, which included a fractured foot. There were no immediate reports of any other serious injuries.

Durham County deputies shut down the westbound lanes of I-40 for several hours as crash investigators and forensic teams gathered evidence, examined surveillance footage, and conducted witness interviews at the site.

Currently, no charges have been brought against anyone. The Durham County Sheriff’s Office investigators are still asking the public for any information regarding the vehicles involved, their speeds, and the specific events that led to the incident.
