Kansas City police are investigating the deaths of two young adults found inside an apartment in the Northwest Englewood area Friday morning, a case authorities are treating as a homicide investigation as grieving families search for answers.

Kaiyah Rainey and Joshua Gore Found Dead

According to police, officers were dispatched just before 7 a.m. on May 22 to The Hills apartment complex near the 500 block of Northwest Englewood Road after relatives requested a welfare check when they were unable to contact the pair. When officers entered the apartment, they discovered 22-year-old Kaiyah Rainey and 23-year-old Joshua Gore suffering from traumatic injuries.

Emergency responders pronounced both victims dead at the scene. Investigators later confirmed that both Rainey and Gore died from gunshot wounds. Authorities said detectives immediately began processing the apartment and surrounding area as part of an active homicide investigation.

Kansas City police stated Saturday that investigators are not currently searching for additional suspects, though officials have not publicly explained the circumstances leading up to the shootings or clarified the relationship between the two victims. Detectives continue reviewing evidence, witness information, and communications connected to the case.

Family members shared that Kaiyah Rainey was pregnant at the time of her death, adding another layer of heartbreak to the tragedy. Loved ones created an online fundraiser titled “A Beautiful Farewell for Kaiyah and Josiah” to help cover funeral and memorial expenses while remembering her as a caring and energetic young woman who deeply impacted those around her.

Rainey’s workplace, Locs Hair Salon, also shared a public tribute describing her as someone whose joyful personality and warm spirit brightened every room she entered. Friends and relatives said she was known for her ambition, kindness, and close relationships with family members and coworkers throughout the Kansas City community.

Joshua Gore’s family also expressed deep grief following his death. His mother shared an emotional public message remembering her son as someone who touched many lives and was deeply loved by those closest to him. Community members and friends have continued posting tributes and condolences online as news of the deaths spread across the area.

Kansas City police continue urging anyone with information about the killings to contact homicide detectives or submit anonymous tips through the TIPS Hotline. Investigators say the case remains active as detectives work to determine what led to the deadly shooting inside the apartment complex. The tragedy has left both families mourning the loss of young lives taken far too soon while community members await additional answers from investigators.
