A tragic hit-and-run crash in Potsdam, New York, has left the SUNY Potsdam community mourning the loss of 20-year-old Emily Mae Smith, a student-athlete remembered for her energy, academic success, and impact on those around her. Authorities say the crash happened early Saturday morning and led to the arrest of 18-year-old Jakob D. Krise as investigators continue examining the circumstances surrounding the deadly collision.
According to the Potsdam Police Department, officers responded around 3:37 a.m. on May 16 to reports that a pedestrian had been struck by a vehicle along Pierrepont Avenue. Emergency crews arrived to find Smith critically injured after the collision. She was transported to Canton-Potsdam Hospital, where she later died from injuries sustained in the crash, devastating classmates, teammates, and loved ones across the campus community.
Investigators said the driver involved fled the scene immediately after the impact, prompting a large-scale search involving several law enforcement agencies. During the investigation, authorities identified the suspect vehicle as an older-model black Cadillac Escalade with front-end damage. Officers worked through the early morning hours gathering evidence, interviewing witnesses, and tracking the vehicle connected to the fatal incident.
Police later located the suspect vehicle traveling on U.S. Route 11 east of Potsdam at approximately 7:25 a.m. Authorities identified the driver as Jakob D. Krise of Brasher Falls and took him into custody without incident. Officials charged Krise with leaving the scene of a motor vehicle crash resulting in death, Zero Tolerance Driving While Intoxicated, and driving across hazard markings.
Authorities stated that the investigation remains active and that additional charges could still be filed as evidence continues to be reviewed. Krise was arraigned in Town of Pierrepont Court and later released under probation supervision pending future court proceedings. Law enforcement officials emphasized that the case remains under investigation as they continue gathering information related to the fatal crash.
University officials confirmed that Emily Smith was a sophomore majoring in business administration and a member of the SUNY Potsdam Bears women’s basketball team. In a statement shared with permission from her family, the university described Smith as a transfer student who quickly became an important part of campus life. Officials said she earned Dean’s List recognition while building close friendships and strong relationships with classmates, coaches, and mentors.
The tragedy has deeply affected the university community, where students, athletes, faculty members, and supporters gathered following the incident to support one another. SUNY Potsdam designated the Jerry Welsh Gymnasium as a memorial space where flowers, messages, and tributes could be left in Smith’s honor. Counseling and emotional support services were also made available to students and staff struggling to process the loss.
As the investigation continues, many across Potsdam are remembering Emily Smith not only as a student and athlete, but as a young woman whose life carried promise and meaning far beyond campus. For her family, friends, and teammates, the pain of losing her so suddenly remains overwhelming. The tragedy has left a lasting mark on the university community as loved ones continue searching for healing after a heartbreaking loss.
