It is with deep sorrow and heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of Karen McGregor, a cherished wife, devoted mother, and adored grandmother, who passed away this morning surrounded by the love, prayers, and gentle presence of her family at home. Her loss is truly immeasurable, leaving a tender and aching space in the hearts of all who knew her, one that cannot be filled by anything except the cherished memories she so generously created over a lifetime.
Karen will be remembered above all else for the boundless, unconditional love and devotion she showed to her family every single day of her life. As a wife, she was a steadfast and loyal partner, offering unwavering strength, quiet wisdom, endless patience, and constant support through all of life's seasons, through joys and sorrows, triumphs and challenges, across decades of a marriage built on deep friendship and respect.
As a mother and grandmother, she poured her entire heart and soul into creating a home that was filled with warmth, comfort, laughter, delicious smells from the kitchen, and an abundance of love. Her nurturing spirit, her gentle nature, her famous baking, her perfectly tended garden, and her open-door policy made her the absolute center of her family, the person everyone instinctively turned to for advice, for comfort, for a hug, or simply for a cup of tea and a listening ear.
The memories she leaves behind will forever be treasured by those who had the privilege of being close to her and calling her Mum, Gran, or Nana. They include holiday gatherings around a crowded, noisy table filled with food and stories, simple quiet cups of tea in the kitchen, bedtime stories read with different voices, handwritten birthday cards, wise advice offered without judgment, and the feeling of complete safety that came from being in her presence.
For more than two years, Karen bravely faced a difficult and relentless battle with cancer, displaying extraordinary courage, resilience, dignity, faith, and grace every single step of the way. She faced gruelling treatments, hospital stays, and uncertainty with remarkable determination and positivity, never complaining, always thinking of others first, always asking about her family before herself, inspiring nurses and doctors alike.
In January, with characteristic clarity and bravery, she made the deeply personal and courageous decision to cease active treatment, choosing instead to focus on finding peace, maximizing quality of life, and spending precious, intentional, uninterrupted time with those she loved most. It was a decision made from strength, not defeat, and her grace throughout this final chapter has inspired all who knew her and taught her family about true dignity.
Karen's family extends their heartfelt and profound gratitude to the dedicated staff and volunteers at Beatson Cancer Charity for their unwavering support, practical help, counselling, and kindness throughout her illness, as well as to the compassionate, angels-on-earth team at Marie Curie, whose exceptional palliative care in Karen's final days and hours allowed her to pass with dignity, comfort, free from pain, and peace at home, exactly as she wished.
As they navigate this heartbreaking loss, Karen's family finds solace in the beautiful, full life she lived and the love she shared so generously and without condition. They ask for patience, privacy, and understanding as they take time to mourn together and support one another in the difficult days ahead. Funeral details will be shared in due course.
Karen McGregor's enduring legacy of love, strength, kindness, and grace will live on through her beloved family and in the many, many lives she touched with her gentle spirit. She will be missed more than words can possibly express, but her memory will forever remain alive in the hearts of all who knew and loved her. May she rest in peace, and may her family find comfort in the love and support that surrounds them now.
