A South Bend man is dead, his girlfriend is seriously injured, and the suspected gunman, a former police officer and her ex-partner, later died of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound after a connected house fire, authorities said. The Elkhart County Prosecutor's Office on Tuesday identified the suspect as Adonis Latroy Joseph, 41, of Elkhart, in what investigators are calling a revenge-driven murder-suicide.

South Bend Yoga Instructor Kaylon Woods, 38

Investigators say Joseph is accused of fatally shooting 38-year-old Kaylon Rashaad Woods of South Bend and wounding 30-year-old Madi Morin at an apartment in the 2500 block of Links Drive on Monday afternoon. The duo were dating, and Joseph was Morin's former partner and the father of her two young girls, according to local reports and family statements.

Officers called to the Highlands Apartments around 1:50 p.m. found Morin outside with an apparent gunshot wound and Woods dead inside the unit. Police said Morin was taken to a local hospital, where she is recovering from serious injuries. First responders provided immediate aid before she was transported for emergency surgery and ongoing care.

Woods was a well-known yoga instructor at DRIP Infrared in South Bend, with tributes pouring in following his death. "Kay was the SOUL to this community and the FIRE that positively impacted so many lives," Soul Fire Yoga said in a touching post. "He was so much more than a yoga teacher. He was a father, a friend, a mentor, and the kind of person you knew would show up for you, even if that meant driving three hours back home after a full day of soccer games."

After identifying Joseph as the suspect, investigators tracked him to a residence in the 28000 block of Golden Pond Trail in Elkhart County, where SWAT teams from Elkhart and St. Joseph counties responded around 3:45 p.m. A fire was reported at the home about the same time, prompting a large police and fire response that closed surrounding roads for hours.

When firefighters extinguished the blaze, authorities found Joseph dead inside with an apparent gunshot wound to the head, which investigators say appears to be self-inflicted. Evidence at both scenes is being processed, and the Elkhart County Homicide Unit is investigating both the shooting on Links Drive and Joseph's death on Golden Pond Trail as connected incidents.

South Bend police said Joseph was hired by the department in 2011 and resigned in early 2018 after an internal affairs investigation led to him being relieved of duty. Authorities have not released a formal motive, but the relationship history suggests the attack stemmed from a painful personal dispute involving Morin's new relationship with Woods.

A GoFundMe campaign, "Let's help support Madi and her girls," was organized for the recuperating mother to cover medical bills, childcare, and other expenses amid her recovery. Authorities say there is no ongoing threat to the public as the investigation continues into the tragic sequence of events that left one man dead, a woman wounded, and a former officer dead by suicide.
