9-Year-Old Samuel Rife Killed in Green, Ohio Crash as Community Rallies Around Grieving Family
Samuel Rife, 9, died after being struck by a vehicle in Green, Ohio, prompting community vigils and a GoFundMe to support his family
A wave of grief has swept through Green, Ohio, after the tragic death of 9-year-old Samuel Rife, the son of local pastor J. Harlen Rife, who was killed in a pedestrian accident near his home. The loss has deeply shaken both the church and school communities, leaving many struggling to understand how a routine afternoon turned into an unimaginable tragedy.
According to the Summit County Sheriff’s Office, the incident occurred around 4:30 p.m. on April 17 along Peachwood Way. Authorities say a 2025 Jeep Wrangler was traveling through the residential street when Samuel ran into the roadway and was struck. Emergency responders from the sheriff’s office and the Green Fire Department arrived quickly after receiving the call.
Samuel was transported to Akron Children’s Hospital, where medical staff attempted to save his life. Despite those efforts, he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. Officials confirmed the driver, an 81-year-old man, remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators as the crash was documented.
Investigators with the Summit Metro Crash Response Team are continuing to review the circumstances surrounding the incident. Authorities have stated that, based on initial findings, neither speed nor impairment appears to have been a factor. As of now, no charges have been filed while the investigation remains active.
Samuel was the son of the Rev. J. Harlen Rife of Greensburg United Methodist Church and his wife, Madeline. The news has devastated the congregation, where his father serves as pastor, and has also extended into the broader Green City Schools community, where support systems have been activated for grieving families and classmates.
Loved ones describe Samuel as a bright and compassionate child who cared deeply about others. According to those close to the family, he had a strong interest in helping those in need and had participated in local food distribution efforts in Akron and Canton, showing an early sense of service and empathy far beyond his years.
In response to the tragedy, a GoFundMe campaign has been organized to honor Samuel’s memory and support initiatives within Green City Schools, particularly programs involving family support services. The fundraiser has become a space for the community to share condolences, memories, and messages of support for the Rife family during this devastating time.
Plans for a vigil and additional memorial gatherings are underway as the community prepares to honor Samuel’s life. Church members, neighbors, and school families have come together in shared grief, offering prayers and support as they navigate a loss that has left a lasting emotional impact across the region.
As Green continues to mourn, Samuel Rife is being remembered not only for the life he lived, but for the kindness and compassion he showed in his short time. His absence has left a profound void, but his memory lives on through the love of his family, his church, and a community now united in sorrow and remembrance as it seeks healing after an unimaginable loss that has touched every corner of their lives today and moving forward together.
