FREMONT, IA — A deadly shooting outside a Casey’s General Store in Fremont has left one man dead and another facing first‑degree murder charges, according to authorities.
The Mahaska County Sheriff’s Office reported that deputies responded around 5:20 p.m. on February 1 to the store at 203 East Main Street after receiving reports of gunfire. When they arrived, they found David Michael Dyke, 45, of rural Rose Hill, deceased in the parking lot.
Officials said the incident began as a verbal altercation inside the store between Dyke and another man, later identified as Michael Lee, also 45. Dyke eventually exited the store and sat inside his vehicle in the parking lot. Lee followed him outside, where the two exchanged words again. Court documents indicate that Dyke then got out of his vehicle, and the confrontation escalated into a physical altercation.
During the struggle, Lee allegedly produced a .38 caliber revolver and fired multiple shots. At least one round struck Dyke, fatally wounding him, while another round entered the convenience store. No other injuries were reported inside the business.
Law enforcement located Lee hours later, around 2:45 a.m. on February 2, at an address on North Walnut Street in Fremont. He was taken into custody and is currently being held at the Mahaska County Jail on first‑degree murder charges.
The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigations’ Major Crimes Unit is assisting local authorities in the case. Officials have described the shooting as an isolated incident, stressing that there is no ongoing threat to the public.
Community members expressed shock at the violence, noting that Casey’s General Store is a central gathering spot in Fremont. Residents said the incident has shaken their sense of safety in the small town, where violent crime is rare.
Authorities have not released further details about what sparked the initial altercation between Dyke and Lee. Investigators are continuing to gather evidence, review surveillance footage, and interview witnesses to piece together the full sequence of events.
The sheriff’s office is urging anyone with information about the shooting to contact them at 641‑673‑0347.
For Dyke’s family and friends, the tragedy marks a devastating loss. Loved ones described him as a hardworking man with deep ties to the Rose Hill area. His death has left a void in the community, where neighbors are rallying to support his family during this difficult time.
As Lee awaits trial, prosecutors are preparing to pursue charges that could carry a life sentence if he is convicted. The case will likely draw significant attention in Mahaska County as residents seek justice for Dyke and answers about how a verbal dispute escalated into deadly violence.
