Authorities are looking into the death of Renee Macklin Good, a 37-year-old U.S. citizen, who was shot and killed by a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer during an immigration-related operation in south Minneapolis on January 7, 2026. This event has led to intense disagreements between federal authorities and local as well as state officials regarding the circumstances surrounding the shooting.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) asserted that the agent discharged their weapon in self-defense when Good reportedly tried to use her car to threaten the officers involved in the operation. A spokesperson for DHS referred to the gunfire as “defensive,” explaining that the agent was acting to safeguard himself and others around him.

Local leaders strongly contest this version of events. Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey stated that he has watched footage of the incident and dismissed the federal account, demanding an independent inquiry and urging ICE to halt its activities within the city. Frey indicated that the situation escalated quickly and that the presence of ICE after the shooting hindered emergency response efforts.

Minnesota Governor Tim Walz remarked that the state would guarantee a “complete, fair, and rapid investigation” to assess responsibility. Senator Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn., also expressed skepticism regarding the DHS narrative, noting that federal explanations seem inconsistent with the available footage and eyewitness accounts.

Per the Minneapolis police, Good did not seem to be the focus of any law enforcement action. Onlookers described a fraught environment on Portland Avenue, where a vehicle was halted amid activities linked to the operation. A video shared on social media captures agents approaching a burgundy SUV and instructing the driver to exit the vehicle. Shortly afterward, gunfire erupted, and the vehicle eventually came to a stop after colliding with nearby objects. Authorities confirmed that Good was taken for medical assistance but succumbed to her injuries.

Friends and supporters remembered Good as a poet and writer, a mother and wife, and a longtime resident of Colorado who was temporarily living in Minneapolis. Advocacy groups indicated that she was serving as a legal observer during community activities related to federal enforcement operations, a statement that has not been verified by officials.

Civil rights advocates and community organizations criticized the shooting and demanded openness and accountability. The American Humanist Association highlighted the conflicting narratives that have emerged and called for a comprehensive, independent investigation of the matter.

ICE agents were engaging in targeted operations in Minneapolis when the shooting occurred. The identity of the involved agent has not been disclosed to the public. The investigation remains underway, with officials stating that more information will be shared as it becomes available.
