A hairdresser from Sydney and mother of two young boys is being commemorated as a “wonderful individual” following her tragic drowning on New Year’s Day while vacationing with her family on the Mid-North Coast of New South Wales.

Melissa Austin, located in Sydney, NSW

Melissa Austin, 45 years old, from Sydney, passed away on Thursday afternoon after being retrieved from the waters at Dunbogan Beach in the Camden Haven area. Despite the efforts of emergency responders, they were unable to revive her. Many friends, family, and those in the hairdressing sector have shared heartfelt tributes, describing her as compassionate, dedicated to her children, and greatly cherished.

Her passing occurs amidst a series of severe water-related emergencies throughout New South Wales and other locations, marking a heartbreaking beginning to 2026.

Earlier that Thursday, emergency personnel were alerted around 4 a.m. to Maroubra Beach in Sydney's eastern suburbs after reports indicated someone had been swept into the sea. Approximately an hour later, a 25-year-old woman, thought to be a Chinese national, was located but was not able to be revived.

At Coogee Beach, nearby, surf rescue teams began searching just past 6 a.m. for a 25-year-old man who was unaccounted for after reportedly last being seen in the surf. Two additional individuals were saved during that operation. The search for the man was expected to continue the following day, with serious concerns about his safety.

Steven Pearce, the Chief Executive of Surf Life Saving NSW, stated that this string of events has had a significant impact on both families and first responders.

“We have already witnessed a series of tragedies that will affect numerous families and many first responders,” Pearce noted. “This is an exceedingly difficult period.”

Since Christmas Day, surf lifesavers in NSW have conducted over 85 rescues. On just New Year’s Eve, emergency teams faced multiple urgent situations, including an incident at Avoca Beach on the Central Coast, where two off-duty lifesavers rescued a 50-year-old man who was unconscious and subsequently transported to Royal North Shore Hospital in critical condition.

Additional incidents have been reported throughout the state and in other regions, including a drowning in Whitehaven Beach in Queensland’s Whitsundays and a boating accident at Palm Beach in Sydney, where a small boat capsized in turbulent waters. A large-scale search is still ongoing for a teenager missing from that event.

Pearce has called on beach visitors to take care, especially during the holiday season when conditions can change swiftly.

“This series of rescues and drownings has taken many by surprise,” he stated. “We are urging everyone to be cautious when entering the water and to swim only at patrolled beaches when possible.”

As inquiries proceed, communities throughout Sydney and the Mid-North Coast are mourning the loss of lives, including that of Melissa Austin, whose memory is celebrated by those who knew her as a nurturing mother and a caring figure in their lives.
