 The Austin community is mourning the heartbreaking loss of 18-year-old Isaiah Atkinson, who was shot and killed during a New Year’s Eve celebration in North Austin. Isaiah’s passing represents the city’s first homicide of 2026, leaving friends, family, and neighbors in a state of shock as they try to process this unexpected and irrational tragedy.


As per the Austin Police Department, officers responded to a business complex on West Anderson Lane near North Lamar Boulevard around 1:30 a.m. on January 1, 2026, after receiving reports about a young man who had sustained a gunshot wound. Upon their arrival, authorities found Isaiah, who had been shot in the chest amidst a disturbance at the gathering. Emergency personnel promptly initiated CPR; however, Isaiah was declared dead at 1:45 a.m.

Investigators suspect that the shooting was carried out by a single individual who has not yet been apprehended. Police are appealing to the community for assistance in locating potential witnesses or suspects and are encouraging anyone who may possess surveillance, cellphone, or social media recordings of the events before, during, or after the shooting to step forward.
