Fatal Crash Report – Three Victims Identified in Rhode Island Wrong-Way Collision

We recall and pay tribute to three lives tragically lost in a horrific wrong-way collision early this morning in Lincoln, Rhode Island, with great sorrow: Denis Aguilar Campos, Jaylin Rainford, and Chiemelie Okonkwo. Families, friends, and many communities across state boundaries mourn a terrible loss in their abrupt death.

Fatal Crash in Rhode Island Wrong-Way Collision

According to information released by the Rhode Island State Police and reported by the WINY Radio Newsroom, authorities received multiple 911 calls at approximately 12:27 a.m. reporting a vehicle traveling southbound on Route 99 North. Soon after, further calls said that the same car had been in a bad crash on Route 146 North in Lincoln.

Investigators found that 41-year-old Chelsea, Massachusetts resident Denis Aguilar Campos was driving a Ford pickup truck southbound on Route 146 North's high-speed lane. The car crashed straight into a northbound Chevrolet Tahoe traveling in the high-speed lane as it approached Route 116. After the collision, the two cars burst into flames in a tragic and horrible sight.

Jaylin Rainford, age 20, of Randolph, Massachusetts, drove the Chevrolet Tahoe. Inside the Tahoe was also Chiemelie Okonkwo, age 20, of Lawrenceville, Georgia. Sadly, Campos, Rainford, and Okonkwo were declared dead on the spot. Officials affirmed the two cars had no other passengers.

Rhode Island State Police Headquarters, the Lincoln Woods Barracks, the Lincoln Police Department, and the Lincoln and Cumberland Fire Departments quickly reacted and worked under extremely trying situations. Route 146 North stayed closed for about four hours while investigators and emergency personnel combed the scene.

Every life lost signifies much more than the specifics of a horrible accident. Denis Aguilar Campos, Chiemelie Okonkwo, and Jaylin Rainford were friends, family members, and people whose lives had purpose, promise, and connection. Just 20 years old, Jaylin and Chiemelie had dreams and opportunities that were stolen far too soon.

Hearts stay heavy for the friends and relatives left to negotiate life without their loved ones as the inquiry goes on. This catastrophe is a sobering reminder of how quickly life on our roads can be lost or altered.
