Andrew Otero Dundalk, MD Tribute, Reason for Passing: Mathematics Educator at Severn School Passes Away Unexpectedly, Pupils Grieve

 The Severn School community located in Severna Park is grieving the heartbreaking death of Andrew Otero, a former math instructor, who made a significant and lasting impression on students, fellow educators, and the entire school community.

Hailing from Bristol, Connecticut, Otero devoted his life to education, service, and mentorship. As a proud first-generation member of the armed forces, he joined the United States Marine Corps in 2009 when he was just 17 years old. Throughout his five years in service, he was stationed in Washington, D.C., where he operated directly alongside the White House during the Obama administration—an experience that showcased his dedication and discipline in public service.

After completing his military commitment, Otero forged ahead as a first-generation college graduate. He obtained a bachelor’s degree in applied mathematics from Towson University, establishing a foundation for a career marked by intellectual curiosity, rigor, and a love for teaching. He subsequently settled in Dundalk, Maryland.

At Severn School, Otero fulfilled roles far beyond that of a math teacher. He conducted some of the most rigorous and fulfilling courses at the school, such as AP Computer Science Principles and AP Calculus AB—fields he was passionate about and made vibrant for his pupils. His classroom was a sanctuary where high expectations met encouragement, challenging students to engage in critical thinking while being nurtured as individuals.

Outside of the classroom environment, Otero held various leadership and mentorship positions. He acted as the Grade Dean for the Class of 2025, serving as a trusted advisor during critical developmental years for his students. He also guided United Spectrum, the school’s alliance focused on gender and sexuality, as well as the Severn Service Society, which aids both the school community and the wider Annapolis area. His dedication to equity and inclusion was further demonstrated through his role as the Upper School DEIB Coordinator.

Otero's commitment also extended to athletics and institutional roles. He was Head Coach for Track & Field, shaping student-athletes with the same attention and discipline he applied to his academic responsibilities. In addition, he was part of the school’s Steering Committee and took on the role of co-chair for the financial aspect of Severn School’s accreditation, contributing meaningfully to the institution’s long-term vision and sustainability.

Above all, Andrew Otero was a cherished father, a steadfast friend, and a respected educator and coach. Those who had the privilege of knowing him recall his integrity, dedication to serving others, and ability to forge connections with individuals from diverse backgrounds and roles. His life embodied an exceptional blend of compassion, leadership, and service.

The passing of Andrew Otero is deeply felt throughout the Severn School community as well as beyond. As students, colleagues, friends, and family come to terms with his loss, they also celebrate a legacy characterized by unwavering dedication, bravery, and a firm belief in the capabilities of others.
