Novyrose “Novy” Mejia, a devoted nurse at UC Davis Health and the Sacramento VA Medical Center, tragically died on December 13, 2025, after being struck by a car outside the VA’s emergency room entrance in Rancho Cordova, authorities confirmed.
The Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office reported that the pedestrian accident occurred in the afternoon as a driver pulled into the facility’s parking lot, causing Mejia to fall and hit her head on the pavement. She was immediately transported to the VA emergency room before being transferred to UC Davis Medical Center for advanced care but sadly succumbed to her injuries.
Colleagues described Mejia as a hardworking and compassionate nurse whose dedication to patients and community left a lasting impression. Family members remembered her as a loving wife, mother of two sons, sister, and devout Catholic, whose life reflected faith, service, and selflessness.
A GoFundMe created by her son, Vernon Mejia, raised over $36,000 by Wednesday to help cover medical bills, funeral expenses, and other needs. The fundraiser highlighted her commitment to helping others, noting she was walking to work when the tragedy occurred.
Authorities have not released details about the driver or any potential charges, and the VA Sierra Pacific Network extended condolences to Mejia’s family and coworkers. UC Davis Health expressed profound sorrow, honoring the nurse whose care and dedication touched countless lives.
