The Walterboro community is grieving the profound loss of Ryan Koontz, who tragically died on Saturday night after a serious two-car accident on US-17A near Clubhouse Road. Ryan was operating his 2015 Dodge SUV just before 11 p.m. when a 2021 Ford pickup, traveling from the opposite direction, crossed the median and struck him head-on.
Even with the prompt assistance from first responders, Ryan did not survive the critical injuries he suffered in the incident. Two other people were transported to a local hospital, and the South Carolina Highway Patrol is still looking into what led to the crash.

Though the specifics of the accident are heartbreaking, it is essential to remember Ryan for more than just the way he passed away. Those who knew him well regarded him as reliable, kind-hearted, and quietly resilient, as someone whose presence provided comfort and stability to his loved ones. Friends would often characterize him as the kind of individual who would arrive when assistance was needed, offer help willingly, and never seek recognition for his actions. Ryan's life was characterized by authenticity, modesty, and profound gratitude for the relationships in his life.
Family members express that Ryan faced life with an open heart and a balanced spirit, cherishing the simple pleasures: quality moments with family, meaningful discussions, and the fulfillment that comes from diligent effort. His absence creates a void that words can hardly convey, and the sorrow felt within the community reflects the significant influence he had during his lifetime.
As friends and family begin to face the challenging times ahead, they find solace in the memories he left behind — moments filled with joy, compassion, and the subtle ways he improved the lives of those lucky enough to know him.
Ryan Koontz should be commemorated with the compassion, honor, and esteem he truly earned. May his family and friends draw strength from one another as they celebrate his legacy and keep his spirit alive.
