Colorado Police Are Investigating the Durango Walmart Shooting: Durango Walmart Attempted Murder-Suicide
Two persons, including the alleged gunman, were hospitalized during a probable attempted murder-suicide at the Durango Walmart on Thursday afternoon. The police are investigating this incident.
Around 4:30 p.m., reports of gunfire inside the establishment triggered a major reaction from the Durango Fire Protection District, La Plata County Sheriff's Office, and Durango Police Department.
Amanda Garrison, a spokeswoman for the Durango Police Department, said that both of the incident's victims were transported to Mercy Hospital. One of the people in the hospital has been identified as the alleged shooter.
"The situation is contained and there are no ongoing hazards to the public," Garrison said in a statement. The details of the shooting, including how the suspect was injured, are still being investigated.
Initial investigations indicate that the violence was caused by a fight between a couple inside the Walmart. Police say the disagreement grew out of control, leading to shootings and injuries. The investigation focuses on a murder-suicide attempt.
Law enforcement and emergency services reacted swiftly to the gunfire. Around five of the clock in the evening, officers and paramedics were still securing the area and providing patient care.
Authorities quickly warned the public to avoid Walmart and the surrounding area so that first responders could work without interference.
The Durango Police Department said in a news release that "We ask the public to avoid the area so first responders may work safely." "More verifiable information will be made public as soon as it becomes available."
As of Thursday evening, police have not yet released the names of people involved or details regarding their current health. The Walmart remained closed while investigators processed the area.
According to officials, updates will be provided as the investigation develops.
