Authorities say Pierre Mack, a MnDOT contractor, was killed Wednesday morning in a fatal construction zone accident on northbound Interstate 35W.
The Minnesota State Patrol reports that the event occurred shortly before nine in the morning near Burnsville Parkway. According to investigators, Mack was struck while turning a boom vehicle that was operating inside the closed construction zone while he was on foot.
Radio broadcasts stated that Mack was immediately pronounced dead by emergency services. Officials claim that at the time of the accident, the construction zone was off-limits to the public and that only authorized vehicles and staff were present.
The identity of the boom truck driver is unknown. No more injuries were reported.
The Hennepin County Medical Examiner's Office was dispatched to the scene, and the Minnesota State Patrol and occupational safety officials are still looking into the incident.
This event has raised new concerns about worker safety in construction zones and highlighted the dangers that contractors and laborers working alongside major roadways face.
