Authorities in Texas say two children were rescued from a severely neglected home after officers discovered what they described as hazardous, unsanitary, and alarming living conditions inside a residence on E. Young Avenue. Two adult men were arrested in connection with the case as investigators continue to review the circumstances surrounding the situation.
According to police, officers responded on May 20 at approximately 7:47 a.m. after a neighbor reported a strong foul odor coming from the home and raised concerns about the welfare of an elderly resident. The caller feared that someone inside the residence may have died due to the smell and lack of recent activity.
When officers arrived, they reported immediately noticing a strong odor coming from the property. After knocking and receiving no response, they entered the home to check for possible medical emergencies.
Inside, officers located two adult men identified as Michael Robbins, 34, and John Robbins, 68. While searching the residence, authorities say they encountered extreme unsanitary conditions, including widespread garbage accumulation, rotting food, insect infestations, and general neglect throughout the home.
Officers also discovered two children, ages 8 and 10, inside the residence. According to the affidavit, the children were found in a bathtub containing dirty water and appeared to be living in conditions described by investigators as severely unclean. Police reported that the children showed signs of prolonged neglect and poor hygiene.
Authorities said the children were immediately removed from the home and transported to a local children’s hospital for medical evaluation and care. Neighbors later told investigators they had not seen the children outside for an extended period of time.
The affidavit further states that the home contained rat and mouse droppings, decaying food, and areas of standing water contaminated with insects. Investigators also noted that maggots were present in parts of the kitchen, reinforcing concerns about long-term unsanitary conditions.
Police say both Michael Robbins and John Robbins were arrested and charged with abandoning or endangering a child with intent. The case remains under investigation as authorities work to determine how long the children were exposed to the conditions and whether additional charges may be filed.
Officials have not released further details about the children’s current condition, but confirmed they are receiving medical care and protective services following their removal from the residence.
The case has drawn strong reaction from the community, with many expressing shock and concern over how the situation went unnoticed for so long. Authorities continue to urge anyone who suspects child neglect or abuse to report it immediately to local law enforcement or child protection services.
