Fatal Louisiana Highway 27 Crash Leaves One Dead and Multiple Injured as Driver Arrested for DWI
Lake Charles man killed in three-vehicle crash on Highway 27 as suspected impaired driver is arrested and faces vehicular homicide charges
A tragic early morning crash in Calcasieu Parish, Louisiana has claimed the life of a Lake Charles man, leaving a community in mourning and raising renewed concerns about the dangers of impaired driving. The three-vehicle collision occurred shortly before 6:00 a.m. on April 9, 2026, along Louisiana Highway 27 near Highway 397 in the Bell City area.
According to Louisiana State Police Troop D, troopers responded quickly to the scene after receiving reports of a serious crash involving multiple vehicles. What they found was a devastating collision that would ultimately result in the loss of a 32-year-old man whose life ended far too soon under tragic circumstances.
Preliminary findings indicate that a 2022 Chevrolet Silverado, driven by Alfonso Arredondo of Port Neches, Texas, was traveling southbound when the vehicle crossed the center line for reasons that remain under investigation. The truck sideswiped two northbound vehicles, including a 2012 Hyundai Santa Fe and a 2000 Buick Park Avenue.
The driver of the Buick, identified as 32-year-old Erick John of Lake Charles, sustained fatal injuries in the crash. Authorities confirmed that he was properly restrained at the time of the collision, but despite this precaution, the severity of the impact led to his death at the scene, leaving loved ones facing an unimaginable loss.
Following the initial impact, Arredondo reportedly lost control of his vehicle, which left the roadway, entered a ditch, and overturned. The driver of the Hyundai and four passengers inside that vehicle, all of whom were properly restrained, were transported to a nearby hospital with injuries described as minor to moderate.
During the course of the investigation, troopers observed signs that Arredondo may have been impaired at the time of the crash. He was taken into custody and later booked into the Calcasieu Parish Correctional Center, facing multiple serious charges including vehicular homicide, vehicular negligent injury, and driving while intoxicated.
Authorities confirmed that routine toxicology samples were collected and submitted for further analysis as part of the ongoing investigation. These results are expected to play a critical role in determining the full circumstances surrounding the crash and any contributing factors involved.
As the community reflects on this devastating loss, Louisiana State Police are once again urging drivers to remain alert, avoid impaired driving, and prioritize safety on the road. The life of Erick John serves as a painful reminder of how quickly tragedy can strike, leaving lasting consequences for families, communities, and everyone affected by preventable crashes.
