The Sierra Canyon High School student Hunter Langley died in a horrific vehicle accident early Wednesday morning on his way to school. The community is mourning his passing. His passing has rocked the campus and the outside world; classmates, coworkers, teachers, and friends are now grieving a young life gone far too early.
Hunter Langley was remembered as a cherished son, brother, friend, and teammate, as well as a bright and benevolent student whose presence had a profound effect on those around him. Friends said he was encouraging, driven, and considerate—someone who motivated others both in the classroom and on the court.
The Mission League boys basketball competition final between Sierra Canyon and Notre Dame was called off in honor of the loss following the event. The league champion would have been found in the 7 p.m. Wednesday game. With Notre Dame seeded No. 2, Sierra Canyon came into the contest as the No. 1 seed.
A Sierra Canyon High School pupil who died in an accident involving a Tesla has been found.
In a letter to ticket holders, the Sierra Canyon Athletics Department revealed the suspension of all athletic activities for the day:
“Given the unexpected loss within the Sierra Canyon School community, the Sierra Canyon Athletics Department has chosen to call all athletic events scheduled for today, Wednesday, February 4, including tonight's boys basketball game against Notre Dame. Note that every ticket holder will get a whole refund. As we devote this time to help our kids, families, and neighborhood, we value your understanding.
The championship game cannot be rescheduled because the CIF Southern Section regular-season calendar stops on Wednesday. Although both schools have agreed to provide final league standings based on tournament seeding, no Mission League victor will be crowned this year.
"Competition is secondary in times like this," athletic director Alec Moss stated. "We center on caring, compassion, and support for all those impacted."
Reports from the California Highway Patrol suggest the fatal crash happened just before 7:40 a.m. along Malibu Canyon Road, close to Pepperdine University. Officials reported that a Tesla automobile descended some 30 feet down an embankment close to Potter Drive and ended up in heavy foliage.
Firemen from Los Angeles County found the driver still inside the automobile after they arrived at the site. The person was pronounced dead where they were found. CHP authorities verified that the only passenger was the driver. The cause of the crash is still under examination; it is not yet clear if speed, weather conditions, or mechanical problems contributed.
In a letter Wednesday morning, Sierra Canyon Head of School Jim Skrumbis spoke to families recognizing the great loss and stressing community support:
It is with a great grief that I inform our Upper Campus community of the terrible news that a pupil passed earlier this morning in a car accident. The family as they negotiate an impossible tragedy have my sincerest condolences.
Skrumbis urged families to have deliberate discussions at home and pointed out that counselors and wellness employees will be available to help pupils in the next few days.
He noted that "our strength as a community is discovered in our empathy, our presence, and the methods we come together to look out for one other," under situations like these.
While Sierra Canyon grieves Hunter Langley, tributes keep coming in from friends, teammates, and families whose lives he affected. Though his life was abruptly cut off, those who knew him claim his compassion, personality, and energy will never be forgotten.
While still honoring Hunter's memory through unity, empathy, and support for one other, the neighborhood has asked for privacy for the Langley family as they grieve.
