AUGUSTA, GA — Authorities are asking for the public’s help in identifying a man wanted for questioning in connection with a theft at Fleming Baptist Church on Peach Orchard Road.

Augusta Church Theft: $600 Damage Reported

According to the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office, surveillance video captured a white male arriving at the church around 2:45 a.m. on January 27. The suspect was seen wearing a black and red hoodie, a gray beanie, and carrying a bookbag. Footage shows him cutting a lock and removing a breaker from an air conditioning unit before checking another unit on the property.

Officials stressed that this was not a sanctioned repair or donation. The incident caused approximately $600 in damage to the church’s equipment.

Deputies are urging anyone who recognizes the suspect or has information about his identity to come forward. Contact Deputy Thomas Langford at 706‑821‑1038, or reach an on‑duty investigator at 706‑821‑1020 or 706‑821‑1080.

The theft has frustrated church leaders and community members, who say the damage not only affects the congregation but also impacts outreach programs that rely on the facility. Fleming Baptist Church has long been a fixture in the Augusta area, serving families and supporting local initiatives.

Investigators believe the suspect’s distinctive clothing and appearance may help generate leads. Community cooperation is often critical in cases like this, where surveillance footage provides evidence but public input can help identify individuals.

As the investigation continues, authorities are reminding residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activity. For churches and other community institutions, the incident serves as a reminder of the importance of security measures, particularly during overnight hours when properties are most vulnerable.
