MINNEAPOLIS, MN — The Minnesota National Guard was mobilized Saturday night by Gov. Tim Walz to secure a federal building and surrounding areas following the fatal shooting of Alex Pretti, an incident that has sparked widespread outrage and raised serious questions about the government’s initial account.
Footage released this week shows Guard vehicles and personnel moving into the city as tensions remain high. The deployment comes after newly surfaced video captured the entire encounter between Pretti and a large group of Department of Homeland Security (DHS) officers.
The video shows Pretti directing traffic before officers approached and asked him to move out of the street. He complied, walking toward the sidewalk. Moments later, a DHS officer is seen forcefully pushing a woman to the ground. Pretti moved to help her, at which point officers pepper‑sprayed both individuals and dragged Pretti to the ground.
Critically, the footage never shows Pretti pulling a weapon. While officers later removed a legally permitted firearm from his possession, another officer fired nine shots, killing him.
In the aftermath, Trump administration officials described Pretti as a domestic terrorist intent on harming law enforcement. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem claimed the incident involved an attempt to inflict “maximum damage,” while Border Patrol Chief Gregory Bonvino defended the shooting as justified.
However, the newly surfaced video appears to contradict those claims. Pretti’s family has strongly disputed the official narrative, releasing a statement accusing the administration of spreading falsehoods. They insist the footage shows Pretti holding his phone with his hands visible while being pepper‑sprayed, not brandishing a weapon.
The case has ignited protests and calls for accountability, with critics demanding transparency and independent investigation into DHS actions. The Guard’s presence underscores the seriousness of the unrest as Minneapolis braces for further demonstrations
