BONNEVILLE COUNTY, ID — Authorities say a 43‑year‑old Idaho man fatally shot his wife before turning the gun on himself Wednesday morning in what investigators describe as an apparent murder‑suicide near the Wyoming‑Idaho state line.
According to the Bonneville County Sheriff’s Office, Christopher Moon called 911 at 8:06 a.m. from Jackknife Road, telling dispatchers he had shot his wife, Cassandra “Cassie” Moon (Clinger), 23, and planned to kill himself. Deputies arrived to find two vehicles parked roadside and briefly spoke with Moon by phone, urging him to surrender peacefully. Moments later, they observed him shoot himself. Both were found dead from gunshot wounds.
Officials confirmed that the couple’s three young children — ages 4, 2, and a newborn — were unharmed and remained safe with Clinger’s mother at the family home nearby. Deputies, assisted by Lincoln County, Wyoming authorities and Star Valley Ambulance, spent hours collecting evidence at the scene.
Family members described the relationship as troubled, marked by allegations of abuse and custody disputes. Clinger’s sisters told Cowboy State Daily that Moon, who was 20 years older, had a history of stalking and violence. Clinger had recently filed for divorce and obtained a protection order. In a chilling final message to his mother‑in‑law after the shooting, Moon wrote: “Satan got ahold of me. I’m so sorry, I love her so much.”
Clinger was known locally for her openness about mental health struggles. She ran a Facebook group titled “We Are Not Alone”, where she shared her experiences to help others.
A GoFundMe campaign titled “In Memory of Cassie Clinger”, organized by Addie Garn of Afton, Wyoming, had raised more than $27,000 by Thursday to cover funeral expenses and provide support for Clinger’s children.
The investigation remains ongoing as authorities continue to piece together the events leading up to the tragedy.
