Law enforcement has named the two persons discovered deceased in a home on Homer Place in the Town of Poughkeepsie on Wednesday as Peter Lopez and his spouse, Debbie Lopez, who is also recognized as Debbie Mawhinney-Lopez.
According to the Town of Poughkeepsie Police Department, officers were sent to the location at 21 Homer Place around 12:11 p.m. after a call reported a critical situation. When they arrived, they found a male and a female, both in their fifties, who were declared dead at the scene. Authorities later verified that both individuals appeared to have suffered from gunshot injuries.
Investigators have stated that this occurrence is being regarded as a domestic situation where Peter Lopez, aged 59, fatally shot his wife and then took his own life. The police have underscored that the investigation is still in progress and that there is no risk to the community.
The pair had been wed for 34 years. Deborah Lopez, aged 54, previously worked for the Arlington Central School District and hailed from Howard Beach. The incident has profoundly impacted the local community, as friends and neighbors voiced their shock and grief.
