A murder investigation has commenced following the discovery of a man's body within a burning garage in Peoria on Wednesday morning.

At about 8:16 a.m., the Peoria Fire Department, along with the Peoria Police Department, responded to a fire in a garage situated behind a home at 1210 NE Perry. After the firefighters put out the fire, they located a man's corpse within the premises.

The deceased has been identified as 68-year-old Jimmy L. Steele. The Peoria County Coroner declared him dead at 9:00 a.m. at the scene.

An autopsy indicated that Steele's death resulted from strangulation, in addition to several blunt and sharp force trauma injuries. Authorities confirmed that he had already lost his life before the fire ignited.

The investigation is ongoing and being conducted by the Peoria Police Department, the Peoria Fire Department, and the Peoria County Coroner's Office.
