Driver Charged in Sullivan County Crash After Passenger Dies After Falling from Window in Fatima Guadalupe Valenzuela-Flores Car Accident
Authorities in Sullivan County have charged a 21-year-old man with multiple offenses, including DUI and vehicular murder, following a fatal crash that occurred early Monday morning. The Tennessee Highway Patrol (THP) reports that the horrific incident happened just before 4 a.m. along Highway 421 at Shady Ford Road. Investigators said a passenger leaned out of the window of the involved 2013 Chevrolet Equinox, which was traveling north, right before the incident.
THP's initial report stated that the vehicle veered off the right side of the road and into a ditch. The passenger who was thrown from the vehicle during the collision and ended up in the ditch was 21-year-old Fatima Guadalupe Valenzuela-Flores. Emergency workers quickly responded to the 911 call, but despite their best efforts to save Valenzuela-Flores' life, he was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities said her injuries were consistent with being ejected during the confrontation.
The motorist allegedly immediately fled the scene of the crash, and THP has identified him as 21-year-old Jacob Dylan Chambers. According to investigations, Chambers fled the scene, crossed the bridge across South Holston Lake, and halted in a nearby boat ramp parking area before being apprehended by troops. Chambers was charged with DUI, vehicular murder, driving with a suspended license, and reckless endangerment after his arrest.
A second person inside the Equinox was unhurt, according to authorities. Investigators continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash, including whether Chambers' alleged drunkenness
As part of the ongoing investigation, THP will also conduct toxicology tests to determine Chambers' blood alcohol content at the time of the event.
The Tennessee Highway Patrol emphasized that this incident serves as a reminder of the dangers of driving carelessly and under the influence. Officials urged drivers to exercise caution, especially when transporting people, and reminded the public that driving under the influence is a crime that can have deadly consequences. A THP official said, "Every deadly crash we look into serves as a warning that one stupid decision can damage several lives."
Her friends and family are grieved by Valenzuela-Flores's passing. Family members described her as a happy, energetic young woman with a bright future. While the inquiry continues, the community mourns her death and hopes that justice will bring some closure. According to authorities, the Tennessee Highway Patrol is requesting that anyone with additional information regarding the crash contact them.
