Mielun Butler, Charged in Melvin Edwards Homicide, Dies Suddenly Inside Hinds County Detention Center
Murder suspect Mielun Butler was found dead in a Mississippi jail hours after court, prompting a new investigation into his custody death.
A homicide investigation in Mississippi has taken an unexpected and deeply troubling turn, raising urgent new questions about safety inside detention facilities and leaving two separate death investigations unfolding at the same time. What began with the killing of 32-year-old Melvin Edwards inside an apartment last month has now expanded into an even more complex case after the sudden death of the man accused of his murder while in custody.
The original investigation began on June 13, 2026, when officers responded to the Pine Ridge Gardens Apartments in Mississippi following reports of a deadly incident inside one of the units. Responding law enforcement officers discovered Melvin Edwards suffering from critical injuries. Despite emergency response efforts, he was pronounced dead at the scene. His death immediately triggered a homicide investigation as detectives began gathering evidence, interviewing witnesses, and working to establish a timeline of what happened inside the apartment.
In the days that followed, investigators moved quickly to identify potential connections to the case. Authorities arrested 22-year-old Cameron Mitchell and charged him as an accessory after the fact, alleging he played a role after the killing occurred. While that arrest marked progress, detectives continued pursuing additional leads, signaling early on that investigators believed more individuals may have been involved in the events surrounding Edwards’ death.
That investigation eventually led authorities to 22-year-old Mielun Butler. On July 1, members of the United States Marshals Service working alongside the Jackson Police Department arrested Butler in connection with Edwards’ killing. Prosecutors charged Butler with murder, and during a court appearance, a judge in Hinds County set bond at $1 million. Following the hearing, Butler was booked into the Raymond Detention Center to await the next phase of legal proceedings.
What happened next has shocked both investigators and the local community. Just hours after his court appearance, Butler was found unresponsive inside his jail cell. Emergency personnel responded immediately and transported him to Merit Health for medical treatment. Despite lifesaving efforts, he was later pronounced dead. His sudden death transformed an already serious murder investigation into a second major case involving events inside a secured correctional facility.
Hinds County Sheriff Tyree Jones said preliminary evidence suggests Butler may have been the victim of an assault while incarcerated. That statement has intensified scrutiny over what occurred inside the detention center, including who had access to Butler, whether warning signs were missed, and whether jail protocols were properly followed. Questions now center not only on how Butler died, but whether his death could have been prevented.
Because of the seriousness of the circumstances, the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation has taken over the inquiry into Butler’s death. Investigators are expected to review surveillance footage, examine forensic evidence, and interview inmates, staff, and witnesses to determine exactly what happened inside the facility. Authorities have not yet announced whether additional arrests or charges are expected, but officials have made clear the investigation remains active and ongoing.
Now, two families are left navigating separate tragedies connected by one case. Melvin Edwards’ loved ones continue seeking justice for his death, while Butler’s sudden death in custody has created an entirely new set of painful questions. As investigators work to uncover the truth, one reality stands out above all else: what started as a single homicide case has evolved into a troubling chain of events that has shaken public trust and left a community searching for answers.
