It was meant to be a joyful trip to celebrate a family college graduation in Arizona, but it turned into unimaginable tragedy when a crash in San Bernardino County claimed the lives of four-year-old twin sisters Nyah and Naomi and several family members traveling with them along State Route 62 near Freda.

According to the California Highway Patrol the collision happened shortly after 8 a.m. on May 22 and involved multiple family members including Sergio Leon, Antonio Leon, Antonio’s wife Hermina Hernandez, and the twin girls who were traveling together when the incident occurred on the highway stretch.

Family members said they were gathered to celebrate the graduation when concern grew after the group never arrived at the event with relatives beginning to call and search for answers as time passed without any contact from those traveling in the vehicle.

Authorities later confirmed that the family had been involved in a fatal multi-vehicle collision. Investigators reported that another vehicle entered the lane and struck their car leading to a chain reaction crash that left the vehicle engulfed in flames and gave the occupants little to no time to react.

Relatives described receiving devastating news from investigators that no one in the vehicle survived the crash. The twin sisters Nyah and Naomi were pronounced dead at the scene adding to the family’s grief as they began the painful process of identifying loved ones in the aftermath.

Cousin Itzia Zamarripa told local media that the family had been eagerly awaiting the arrival of their relatives when they failed to show up describing the moment confusion turned into heartbreak as repeated calls went unanswered and the reality of the crash began to emerge.

Officials with the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department confirmed that all occupants in the vehicle were killed in the collision. Investigators continue to review the circumstances surrounding the crash including roadway conditions vehicle movement and how the second vehicle entered the lane prior to impact.
