A tragic overnight crash in La Porte County, Indiana, claimed the life of 48-year-old Clemie B. Chapman after a collision involving a passenger vehicle and a semi-truck along a construction zone on U.S. 20. The fatal incident occurred during the early morning hours and has left local authorities continuing an active investigation into the circumstances surrounding the deadly crash near Michigan Street.

Clemie Chapman Dies After Vehicle Crosses

According to the La Porte County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to the scene at approximately 12:46 a.m. following reports of a serious collision involving a passenger car and a commercial motor vehicle. Emergency personnel arrived to find severe damage within a restricted roadway construction area where traffic patterns had been temporarily altered due to ongoing highway work along the busy corridor.

Investigators said the crash occurred several hundred feet west of Michigan Street inside an active construction zone where both eastbound and westbound traffic had been redirected onto a shared section of roadway. Authorities explained that only one lane in each direction remained open while the northern side of U.S. 20 was temporarily being used to accommodate traffic flow through the construction area overnight.

According to preliminary findings, Clemie Chapman was driving a gold 1995 Nissan eastbound on U.S. 20 when the vehicle crossed left of center for reasons that remain under investigation. Deputies said the Nissan then collided with a purple Kenworth semi-tractor trailer combination operated by 30-year-old Pawel Glista of Joliet, Illinois during the overnight hours near the construction zone.

Officials stated Chapman’s vehicle first struck the rear axle area of the semi-tractor before continuing into the trailer section of the commercial motor vehicle. The impact caused catastrophic damage to the passenger vehicle, and authorities confirmed Chapman suffered fatal injuries in the collision and was pronounced deceased at the scene by responding officials shortly after emergency crews arrived at the crash location.

The driver of the semi-truck, Pawel Glista, was not injured in the incident according to investigators. Authorities have not indicated that charges are expected at this stage as detectives continue reviewing evidence connected to the crash. Toxicology results remain pending while officials work to determine all contributing factors that may have led to the deadly collision within the roadway construction area.

Several emergency response agencies assisted at the scene throughout the early morning hours, including members of the La Porte County Sheriff’s Office, Kankakee Township Volunteer Fire Department, La Porte County EMS, the La Porte County Coroner’s Office, and towing personnel tasked with clearing the roadway after the collision. Investigators remained at the site for hours documenting evidence and reconstructing the sequence of events surrounding the crash.

As the investigation continues, the tragedy has renewed attention on the dangers associated with nighttime travel through active construction zones where traffic patterns are temporarily changed and visibility may be limited. Community members throughout La Porte County are mourning the loss of Clemie Chapman while authorities continue gathering evidence and awaiting additional forensic results connected to the case. Officials have not released further details at this time but are expected to provide updates once investigators complete additional stages of the ongoing crash reconstruction and review process in the coming days.
