Cain Clark and Caleb Vazquez Identified in Deadly Islamic Center Shooting as Community Mourns Victims

 A deadly shooting outside the Islamic Center of San Diego has left three people dead and a community in mourning after authorities say two teenage suspects opened fire near the mosque Monday morning. Investigators are now examining the possibility that the attack was motivated by hate, while community members continue honoring a security guard whose actions are being credited with helping prevent an even greater tragedy.

San Diego police identified the suspected shooters as 17-year-old Cain Clark and 18-year-old Caleb Vazquez. Authorities said both teens were later found dead inside a vehicle several blocks away from the Islamic Center with apparent self-inflicted gunshot wounds shortly after the attack unfolded in the Clairemont neighborhood of San Diego.

According to investigators, the gunfire erupted outside the Islamic Center of San Diego, the largest mosque in San Diego County, while worshippers and staff members were moving between buildings on the campus. Among those killed was security guard Amin Abdullah, who community members and officials are now calling a hero. Police Chief Scott Wahl stated that Abdullah “played a pivotal role” in preventing the situation from becoming even more catastrophic.

Law enforcement officials said one of the suspects reportedly left behind a note containing references tied to racial pride, though investigators have not formally announced an official motive at this time.
