Death of Former Speaker Jose de Venecia Jr., 89

Born on December 26, 1936, in Dagupan City, De Venecia started from modest circumstances, fondly remembers mornings rich with birdsong and childhood memories riding carabaos in the fields. Known as "JDV" or "Speaker Joe," he held seven terms in the House of Representatives, including five as Speaker—the longest-serving postwar Speaker in Philippine history. He wrote historic laws that boosted the economy and institutions of the country and helped create the Rainbow Coalition.

De Venecia advocated international collaboration, interfaith dialogue, and peace promotion beyond domestic politics, hence significantly impacting Philippine and world affairs. Dagupan City Mayor Belen Fernandez said he was instrumental in helping to rebuild the city following the 1990 earthquake, highlighting his vision and leadership in restoring its power.

His wife, Gina de Venecia, Pangasinan Fourth District Representative; their children, including former Representative Christopher de Venecia; grandchildren; extended family; and the beloved memory of their late child, KC de Venecia survive him.

The family stated, "As we grieve his loss, we also celebrate a life that helped to create the Philippine Republic and for a legacy that lives on in our laws, institutions, and ongoing quest for peace."

Deep condolences from the country to the De Venecia family. Manong Joe, rest in peace. Many thanks for your amazing service in the community.
