Early this morning while on her commute to work, Nassau County Police Officer Patricia Espinosa was slain in a drunk-driving collision. Authorities said the deadly event happened in the Merrick neighborhood and concerned an intoxicated driver behind a Nissan.

Nassau County Cop Patricia Espinosa Dies

The Nassau County Police Department's 5th Precinct received Officer Espinosa. At the age of 21, she moved from Ecuador to the United States without English and fast learned the language as she established a life geared toward public service.

Following four years of service as a New York State Correctional Officer, she joined the Nassau County Police Department in 2017. She comes from a law enforcement family—one brother works for the Philadelphia Police Department, the other for the NYPD.

Early in the morning, this horrific loss shook society and law enforcement. Officer Espinosa's death serves as another excruciating reminder of the fatal effects of drunk driving.

During this horrific period, our prayers and thoughts are with her loved ones, friends, and other colleagues. Authorities advise the public to drive responsibly and report suspected drunk drivers right away so as not another life is lost.
