New Bedford Woman Ruby Quiroa Santos Killed on Route 18 After Car Breaks Down

 NEW BEDFORD, MA — A tragic crash on Route 18 North has claimed the life of Ruby Alexandra Quiroa Santos, 23, of New Bedford, and left her sister critically injured, according to authorities.

The incident occurred around 9:15 p.m. Friday, January 30, 2026, when Santos’ 2020 Toyota Camry became disabled in the left lane north of the Hillman Street on‑ramp amid partial snow coverage. A 2018 Audi A4 with multiple occupants stopped to assist, joined by two New Bedford police Ford Explorers with emergency lights activated.

As Santos and her sister Selina walked toward the Audi, a 2018 Honda Accord traveling northbound struck both women, the Audi, and one police cruiser. Santos was rushed to a hospital but was pronounced dead the following day, January 31. Selina remained in critical but stable condition. Other individuals sustained minor injuries and are expected to recover.

The crash investigation is being led by the Massachusetts State Police and the Bristol County District Attorney’s Office. No charges were immediately announced, and authorities continue to review evidence to determine the circumstances of the collision.

In the wake of the tragedy, Santos’ younger sister Jakelin Quiroa launched a GoFundMe campaign titled “Honoring Ruby Alexandra Quiroa Santos.” The fundraiser described Ruby as “caring, loving, hardworking” and noted her dream of opening a car shop. Jakelin emphasized the family’s sudden financial burden and the need for support to cover funeral and memorial expenses.

The fundraiser also highlighted Ruby’s vibrant personality, recalling how she shared her mother’s welcoming nature and lit up rooms with her smile and laughter. As of February 6, the campaign had raised more than $31,000, reflecting the outpouring of community support.

Friends, family, and neighbors have expressed grief over the loss of Santos, remembering her as someone who brought joy and warmth to those around her. The collision has also raised concerns about roadway safety during winter conditions, even when weather is not believed to be a direct factor.
