CAMDEN, NJ — The city of Camden is mourning the loss of Howard Bennett, a veteran firefighter who died Thursday after falling into the icy Delaware River during a routine maintenance check of a fire boat.
According to the Professional Firefighters Association of New Jersey, Bennett, 61, was working at Wiggins Waterfront Park around 11 a.m. when he fell through the ice into the frigid water. Multiple rescue boats from the Camden Fire Department and neighboring agencies rushed to the scene, cutting through the ice to reach him. After approximately 30 minutes, Bennett was pulled from the river and transported to Cooper University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Union leaders and city officials described Bennett as a dedicated public servant and family man whose decades of service embodied courage and commitment. Camden Mayor Victor Carstarphen praised first responders for their efforts and pledged full support to Bennett’s family, calling the tragedy a devastating loss for the city.
The incident is being investigated as a line‑of‑duty death, underscoring the risks firefighters face even during routine operations. Officials noted that Bennett’s passing adds to the solemn history of firefighters who have made the ultimate sacrifice while serving their communities.
For colleagues and loved ones, Bennett’s death is a painful reminder of the dangers inherent in public service. He is remembered not only for his professionalism but also for the compassion and dedication he brought to his role. His absence will be deeply felt across Camden, where he served faithfully for many years.
As the investigation continues, tributes are expected to honor Bennett’s life and legacy. The community stands united in grief, offering condolences and support to his family during this difficult time.
🕊️ May Howard Bennett rest in peace, and may strength and comfort surround his family, fellow firefighters, and the Camden community.
