NEW ORLEANS, LA — A Jefferson Parish sheriff’s deputy was killed Friday morning while escorting a funeral procession on Airline Highway in New Orleans.

Jefferson Parish Deputy Christopher Ohlmeyer Dies

Authorities identified the victim as Deputy Christopher Paul Ohlmeyer, 41, of River Ridge. According to the New Orleans Police Department, the crash occurred around 11:40 a.m. in the 9200 block of Airline Highway in the Hollygrove area. Ohlmeyer was riding his motorcycle as part of the procession when he stopped traffic and was struck from behind by another vehicle.

He was rushed to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The driver of the other vehicle was also transported for treatment, though officials have not released that person’s name or condition.

Jefferson Parish Sheriff Joseph Lopinto described Ohlmeyer as a dedicated 14‑year veteran of the agency. He had recently transferred to the Traffic Division and qualified as a motorman. Ohlmeyer graduated from the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office Training Academy in August 2014 and previously served in the Fourth District on the Eastbank.

Sheriff Lopinto said Ohlmeyer is survived by his wife, Desiree, and their children, Gavin and Olivia. The sheriff’s office and local law enforcement community expressed deep sorrow over the loss, remembering Ohlmeyer as a committed public servant who gave his life in service to others.
