Noble High senior Aiden Keefe, 17, dies in pickup truck–Amtrak collision in North Berwick. Beloved student, athlete, and community member remembered;
NORTH BERWICK, ME — A tragic accident claimed the life of Aiden Keefe, a 17‑year‑old senior at Noble High School, after his pickup truck collided with an Amtrak Downeaster passenger train Thursday afternoon.
Authorities say Keefe was driving alone in a white pickup when the crash occurred around 2:30 p.m. near the intersection of Elm Street (Route 4) and Buffum Road. According to North Berwick Police Chief Stephen Peasley, Keefe appeared to be turning right onto Elm Street from Buffum Road when the vehicle struck the train at a diagonal crossing. Peasley confirmed that the crossing gates were functioning properly at the time of the collision.
First responders pronounced Keefe dead at the scene. No passengers or crew aboard the train, which was traveling from Brunswick to Boston, were injured.
The loss has deeply shaken the Noble High School community. Principal A.J. Dufort notified parents in a letter, describing Keefe as a “valued member” of the school and announcing that counselors would be available to students on Friday. Friends and colleagues remembered him as polite, funny, and hardworking, with his former employer at Riverside Farm Stand praising his dedication.
Keefe was also a standout athlete, playing as a wide receiver and returner for Noble’s football team. He was recognized this past fall as one of three receivers named to the Class A South All‑Conference First Team, a testament to his talent and commitment on the field.
In the wake of the tragedy, a Meal Train has been organized to support Keefe’s family, offering meals and assistance as they cope with the sudden loss.
Local and state officials continue to investigate the cause of the crash.
