Chicago police opened an inquiry on February 4, 2026, into a fatal shooting of Gabryel Ayres after a brutal assault on the South Side of the city.
The shooting happened close to 79th Street; footage making its way around on social media shows four armed individuals firing numerous shots at a white vehicle. According authorities, bullets struck the car before it collided with a nearby van a few seconds later.
Police said Gabryel Ayres, a woman inside the white automobile, was shot and declared dead. The male victim in the car received gunshots and is still critically injured. Preliminary reports indicate a youngster was also in the car at the time of the shooting but was uninjured.
Witnesses claimed a SUV drew alongside the white car before bullets began. Immediately after the gunshot, the suspects left the area.
No arrests have been reported. Chicago police keep examining witness accounts and video evidence as the inquiry goes on.
