The Forest City and Rutherford County neighborhood is grieving the untimely passing of 55-year-old Brandon Atkins, who perished in a highway collision on January 31, 2026 amid winter storm circumstances.
According to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, Atkins was driving a Chevrolet pickup eastbound on U.S. 74 when he hit a motor grader operating snow removal. A business hired by the North Carolina Department of Transportation ran the grader. At the scene, Atkins was declared deceased despite the tireless attempts of first responders; the effect pinned him inside his car.
