We remember and celebrate Rell D, the guy whose life was tragically cut short in an early morning attack of violence on the northwest side of South Bend, with heavy hearts. Though at first unknown to police, the victim has since been recognized by family as Rell D, a name that now holds great sadness and significance for those who loved him and for a community grieving yet another life lost too soon.
Early on Sunday, January 25, around 3:00 a.m., police from the South Bend Police Department responded to a ShotSpotter notification in the 700 block of North Brookfield Street. Officers found Rell D, an adult man with what appeared to be a gunshot wound when they got there. He was declared dead at the scene despite quick and intense lifesaving attempts.
The South Bend Police Department's Violent Crimes Unit keeps looking into this murder. Rell D.'s name was suppressed at the time of the first release awaiting notification of next of kin. Now that his identity is known, the loss is even more personal; no longer an unknown victim but rather a person whose life counted, whose absence would be sorely missed.
Rell D was more than just the way he died. He was someone's friend, someone's family, someone whose presence changed other people. For those who knew and loved him, his death leaves behind unanswered questions, broken hearts, and a great feeling of loss. Such acts of violence have far-reaching effects on families, communities, and a whole city working toward peace and healing, much beyond the site.
Authorities are urging everyone with knowledge about the shooting to come forward as this case is still under active investigation.
