Authorities have revealed the identity of the semi-truck operator who died in a multi-vehicle accident on Interstate 79 in Mercer County as 22-year-old Austin Golab from Erie, Pennsylvania, as per the Mercer County Coroner’s Office.
The fatal accident took place amid dangerous winter weather along I-79, where roads covered with snow and limited visibility led to reduced speeds and standstill traffic. Investigators report that one tractor-trailer was either stationary or moving at a slow pace when it was rear-ended by another semi-truck. Following this, a third commercial vehicle crashed into the debris.
Golab was driving the third truck involved in the incident and was declared deceased at the location. Mercer County Coroner John Libonati stated that Golab succumbed to blunt force injuries to both the head and chest. His death has been classified as accidental.

Another person involved in the accident was taken to a nearby hospital with injuries, but details about that individual's condition have not been disclosed.
As reported by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation’s 511PA system, the incident happened on the northbound side of I-79, just over one mile above Exit 122 in Jackson Township. NBC affiliate WFMJ from Youngstown, Ohio, noted that the crash led to the closure of both northbound and southbound lanes of I-79 between the I-80 interchange and Exit 130 for several hours. Pennsylvania State Police later confirmed that all lanes have reopened.
Sources indicate that Golab was returning to Slippery Rock University, where he was enrolled as a student at the time of the accident. Golab held the rank of army specialist.
Austin Golab graduated from Cathedral Preparatory School and pursued studies at Gannon University. Friends and members of the Erie community have started to share messages of remembrance, celebrating him as a bright young man with a hopeful future.
The Pennsylvania State Police are still looking into the reasons behind the crash and emphasize the significant dangers that commercial drivers encounter during harsh winter weather conditions.
