 Billings, Montana, is confronting a tragedy that has shaken the neighborhood: eight members of a family, including four children, were killed Sunday evening in a shooting at a White Star Circle home that later became engulfed in flames. The violence began around 6:01 p.m. on August 23, when police received a 911 call reporting a shooting at 315 White Star Circle. When the first officer arrived at approximately 6:12 p.m., police reported hearing additional gunfire from behind the residence. A man encountered in the backyard was taken into custody and transported to a hospital after suffering an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound; he later died. Investigators have identified the incident as a family-related disturbance rather than a random attack, and officials have said there is no continuing threat to the public. Those identified include Megan Ghekiere, her children, Owen Ireland, 13, and Chloe Ireland, 7, and her stepchildren, Landon Ghekiere, 15, and Charlotte Ghekiere, 12. Megan’s parents, Barb and Dana Smith, and her grandmother, Evelyn Smith, were also killed. The victims represented four generations of a blended family, according to relatives who spoke publicly about the tragedy.

Relatives remembered the 12-year-old as funny, caring, and full of personality, while Landon was described as a patient and protective older brother. Adam Ghekiere, the father of Landon and Charlotte and an airport rescue firefighter, was reportedly working when the shooting occurred. He is now facing the unimaginable loss of his children and other members of his family, while friends and relatives organize support during the aftermath. Megan was remembered as a mother who loved art, painting, and time with family. Other relatives were likewise described as people who valued family gatherings, hobbies, and close connections.

The investigation involves the Billings Police Department, Yellowstone County Sheriff’s Office, Montana Highway Patrol, Montana State Billings Police, Billings Fire Department, Airport Fire, and Laurel Fire. Officials are still working to determine exactly what happened inside the home, including the motive and how the fire began. Damage to the structure, combined with the amount of water used to extinguish the blaze, has complicated evidence recovery.
