Colton Erhart, the 1-year-old survivor of a violent attack inside his Mandan home, is recovering in a hospital after surgery. His grandmother, Melissa Erhart, said the family recently saw him smile for the first time since the attack, calling the moment deeply emotional for everyone there.

The update was shared on the family’s GoFundMe by Melissa, who expressed gratitude for the support surrounding the children and their loved ones. She said Colton’s surgery went well and doctors expect him to make a full physical recovery from his injuries. A photograph showed Colton’s father, Cameron, holding his surviving son as the family continues through grief and cautious hope. Their gratitude reflects how closely others have followed Colton’s recovery and their support has mattered.

The progress comes after a devastating attack reported Thursday at a residence on South Frontier Trail in Mandan. According to an affidavit obtained by KFYR, officers were called at approximately 5:42 p.m. after a report that a mother had stabbed her children. When officers entered the residence following the suspect’s detention, they found three young children lying unresponsive in a bedroom with wounds to their necks. Investigators then began documenting the scene and working to understand what had happened.

Two of the children did not survive despite emergency efforts. They were identified as 3-year-old Morgan Erhart and 5-month-old Ava Erhart, while their 1-year-old brother, Colton, survived and was transported to a hospital for extensive surgery. The deaths left the family facing a devastating reality while doctors worked to treat Colton’s serious injuries and give him the best chance of recovery. That hope remains especially meaningful after such a devastating loss to the family.

Investigators allege that the children’s mother, 22-year-old Kailey Erhart, attacked the children inside the home. The affidavit states that the children’s father and grandmother were present before the violence began and that Erhart allegedly chased them outside while holding a knife. The father told investigators he was able to take a gun away from her, disassemble it, and dispose of its pieces before she locked him out. Investigators are continuing to examine the circumstances surrounding the attack at the home.

According to investigators, the father also provided a video recorded on his phone that allegedly showed Erhart carrying one of the children while a pistol was visible on her hip. In the video, she allegedly told him, “Say goodbye to your kids.” When first responders arrived, authorities reportedly found Erhart inside the home covered in blood and holding a knife to her own throat before she eventually dropped it and was taken into custody. Officers then detained her there.

The investigation has also examined circumstances involving the family before the attack. Authorities said Erhart and the children’s father were separating, and he had planned to divorce her, while the father had previously reported concerns that she might hurt herself or the children. The affidavit states she had been placed in a mental health facility within the previous 12 to 18 months and was later cleared to be around the children after her discharge. Those details remain part of the broader case as the investigation continues.

Erhart is facing two counts of murder, attempted murder, two counts of terrorizing with a dangerous weapon, three counts of aggravated assault, and misdemeanor domestic violence. She is being held on a $3 million cash bond and has not entered a plea. For the family, legal case unfolds alongside a urgent journey: grieving Morgan and Ava while watching Colton heal.
