 A Sunday evening family disturbance in Billings quickly became a devastating scene of gunfire, flames, and loss, with multiple people, including children, killed inside a West End home. The tragedy unfolded at a residence near 315 White Star Circle on August 23, 2026, after a 911 caller reported a disturbance and gunshots could reportedly be heard in the background. What followed required a massive response from police, firefighters, and neighboring agencies.

Officers were dispatched at approximately 6:01 p.m., but the danger did not end when emergency crews arrived. Firefighters encountered gunfire as well, preventing them from immediately entering or operating around the burning residence. Billings Fire Chief Matt Hoppel said crews could not begin normal firefighting operations until authorities could establish that the scene was secure. The delay added another layer of difficulty to an already dangerous emergency.

By the time firefighters could safely work, the house was consumed by flames and ultimately destroyed. Nearby residences suffered minor heat-related damage, but crews managed to keep the fire from spreading to neighboring properties. Outside the home, authorities encountered a man suffering from what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to Billings Assistant Police Chief Shawn Mayo. He was transported to a hospital for treatment but later died from his injuries. Interim Yellowstone County Sheriff Kent O’Donnell said investigators had identified everyone involved, including the suspected perpetrator, and officials stated that no one else was believed to be at large.

The investigation has been described as unusually complex because of the number of agencies involved and the devastating conditions at the property. Deputies from Stillwater County and Carbon County joined Billings and Yellowstone County personnel in responding to the emergency. A fundraiser circulating online named Adam Ghekiere, an airport rescue firefighter at Billings-Logan International Airport, and described his wife, Megan Ghekiere, children, and other relatives among those lost. The fundraiser also identified Erica Schneider and Danny Schneider as family members who lost their children, Landon and Charlotte, although those names and relationships had not appeared in the initial official information.
