In Bryan, Texas, authorities are continuing to investigate a fatal stabbing that occurred early Monday morning at a residential apartment complex on Poplar Circle, an incident that left a 59-year-old man dead and led to the arrest of a suspect as detectives work to understand what triggered the violent confrontation.

Robert Sweeps Identified as Victim in Bryan Apartment

According to the Bryan Police Department, officers responded at approximately 3:21 a.m. on May 25, 2026, after receiving reports of a stabbing in the 2700 block of Poplar Circle. When officers arrived, they found 59-year-old Robert Sweeps suffering from a serious stab wound to the torso and immediately began providing emergency first aid while waiting for medical personnel to arrive.

Emergency responders from Bryan Fire Department EMS transported Sweeps to St. Joseph Health Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead despite life-saving efforts. Authorities confirmed that the severity of the injury made survival unlikely, and the case was quickly elevated to a homicide investigation as detectives began processing the scene.

Investigators say the suspect was initially believed to be located inside a nearby apartment, prompting officers to secure the area and evacuate neighboring units out of caution. The Bryan Police Tactical Response Team executed a search warrant at the suspected location, though the individual was not found inside at that time.

Shortly after, police say 69-year-old Nolan Benford returned to the scene and voluntarily surrendered to law enforcement. Officers took him into custody without further incident, and he was later booked into the Brazos County Jail on charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon as the investigation continued to develop.

Authorities have not yet released details regarding what may have led to the confrontation between Sweeps and Benford. Detectives are actively working to determine whether the two individuals knew each other and what events occurred in the moments leading up to the stabbing.

The Bryan Police Department continues to review evidence, interview witnesses, and examine the timeline of the incident. Officials have not indicated whether additional charges may be considered as the investigation progresses and more forensic information becomes available.

Residents in the Poplar Circle area have been urged to remain alert and report any information that could assist investigators. Authorities say even small details from neighbors or witnesses could help clarify the circumstances behind the deadly encounter as detectives work to complete a full reconstruction of the case. The investigation remains active and ongoing as law enforcement seeks a clearer understanding of what led to Robert Sweeps’ death.
