Charter Bus Traveling from New York to Charlotte Triggers Fatal I-95 Pileup, Five Lives Lost and Dozens Injured Near Work Zone
Five killed, including two children, after a charter bus crash on I-95 in Virginia as investigators examine cause, driver and chain reaction breaking!
A devastating early morning crash on Interstate 95 southbound has left multiple families grieving after a charter bus collision triggered a chain-reaction pileup that claimed five lives and injured dozens more. What began as routine overnight travel quickly turned into one of the most serious highway incidents in the region, unfolding in the darkness just before dawn near a work zone where traffic had begun to slow.
According to Virginia State Police, the crash occurred around 2:35 a.m. near the 146-mile marker when a charter bus operated by E&P Travel failed to slow for traffic ahead. Investigators say the bus struck a Chevrolet Suburban, setting off a chain reaction that involved multiple vehicles traveling southbound on the interstate. The impact and momentum of the crash created a cascading collision that quickly escalated beyond a single impact.
Authorities reported that the Suburban was forced into an Acura SUV as additional vehicles became entangled in the crash sequence. The bus continued forward after the initial impact, striking several more vehicles before finally coming to a stop. Emergency responders arrived to find a large and chaotic scene stretching across the highway, with multiple damaged vehicles and urgent calls for medical assistance.
Officials confirmed that five people were killed in the crash, including two children. Four of the victims were inside the Acura SUV: a 45-year-old man, a 44-year-old woman, a 13-year-old girl, and a 7-year-old boy from Greenfield, Massachusetts. Investigators said the vehicle caught fire following the collision, leaving little time for escape and adding to the severity of the tragedy. The fifth victim was a 25-year-old woman from Worcester, Massachusetts, who was riding in the Chevrolet Suburban.
In addition to the fatalities, approximately 44 people were transported to hospitals for treatment. Among them were several individuals with serious injuries, including three who remain in critical condition. Medical teams across the region worked through the early morning hours to stabilize patients, while emergency crews continued clearing debris and assisting survivors at the scene.
The bus driver, identified as 48-year-old Jing S. Dong of Staten Island, New York, was also injured. Authorities confirmed that charges are pending as investigators continue to examine the sequence of events that led to the collision. Federal transportation officials have joined the investigation, reviewing licensing records, training procedures, and operational details tied to the driver and the company involved.
Officials also noted that early findings are still being verified, and the investigation remains active as authorities work to determine all contributing factors, including traffic conditions, speed, and driver awareness in the moments leading up to the crash. Virginia leaders expressed condolences to the victims’ families and gratitude to first responders who managed a large and complex emergency scene under difficult conditions.
As the investigation continues, communities in Massachusetts, New York, and beyond are now left mourning the sudden loss of multiple lives in a single moment on the highway. Families are facing unimaginable grief, and survivors are beginning long recoveries. The tragedy has also renewed conversations about highway safety in work zones, overnight travel risks, and the importance of caution when traffic begins to slow unexpectedly on major interstates.
