Atlanta Area Reeling After Random Shooting Spree Leaves Two Women Dead and Man Critically Injured
Authorities arrest suspect after a series of random shootings across DeKalb County and Brookhaven leaves two women dead and one man critically injured
Authorities in the Atlanta metropolitan area are investigating a disturbing and violent chain of events that left two women dead and a man critically injured after a series of apparently random shootings across DeKalb County and Brookhaven, Georgia. The suspect, identified as 26-year-old Olaolukitan Adon Abel, is now in custody as detectives work to understand what led to the early morning attacks that spanned multiple locations.
According to the Brookhaven Police Department, the violence began shortly after 12:50 a.m. outside a Checkers restaurant on Wesley Chapel Road, where a woman was shot multiple times and later died from her injuries. Investigators say there was no known connection between the victim and the suspect, adding to the shock surrounding the case.
Just hours later, around 2:00 a.m., officers responded to Cherokee Plaza near a Kroger on Peachtree Road, where a 49-year-old unhoused man was discovered suffering from multiple gunshot wounds while sleeping outside a business. Emergency responders quickly provided aid at the scene, and he was transported to Grady Memorial Hospital in critical condition, where he remains under medical care.
The violence escalated again later that morning when, at approximately 6:50 a.m., 40-year-old Lauren Bullis was fatally shot and stabbed while walking her dog on Battle Forest Drive. Police say this third incident, like the others, appears to be random, with no known relationship between the suspect and the victim.
Brookhaven Police Chief Brandon Gurley described the incidents as “particularly alarming,” emphasizing during a press briefing that the rapid sequence of attacks could have continued if law enforcement had not quickly identified and tracked the suspect. Officials said coordinated efforts between multiple agencies played a critical role in stopping the violence.
Investigators were able to link the incidents through surveillance and license plate reader technology, which identified a silver Volkswagen Jetta rental vehicle connected to the suspect. Authorities later located and arrested Abel in Troup County, bringing the multi-jurisdictional search to an end.
He is currently facing multiple charges, including murder, aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, with additional charges expected as the investigation continues. Officials say the case spans both DeKalb County and Brookhaven, highlighting the scale and coordination required to respond to the situation.
As the investigation moves forward, authorities stress that there is no ongoing threat to the public. However, the impact of the shootings has left communities shaken, with residents struggling to process the sudden and seemingly random loss of life. Victims’ families and the wider Atlanta area are now left searching for answers as detectives continue working to determine a possible motive behind the attacks.
