William “Bumpy” John Schieck Obituary

Proudly serving his country in the United States Army, Bill developed lifelong bonds with Memo Capone and Tom Boucher. He spent three exciting years as a lobster fisherman with Memo after his military duty, an encounter he would often reflect on throughout his life. Rising through the ranks to become a detective, Bill spent 21 years in public service with the New York City Police Department. John Jay College of Criminal Justice graduate and proud president of the Detective Endowment Association.

Bill made close and long friendships with coworkers Louie Cruz, Eddie Lentol, Jack Cassidy, and Ray Kopp during his career—relationships that meant everything to him. After retiring from the NYPD, he kept working professionally as a Presbyterian Hospital audit examiner.

Most of all, Bill loved time spent with friends and family. By marriage, he welcomed two daughters, Kerin and Katie, into the family; he was a loving father to his sons, Billy and Danny. Delighting his seven grandkids Will, Kristie, Caroline, Daniel, Connor, Molly, and Brendan with goofy songs, over-the-top facial expressions, and his distinctive dance steps, "Gramps" derived great pleasure.

Bill enjoyed telling stories from his years in the military, on the job as a police officer, and out on the water as a lobster fisherman because he was renowned for his sharp wit, honest nature, and contagious sense of humor. Cars were among his biggest interests. Though he respected every kind of car, nothing equaled his cherished 1954 Corvette—a genuine labor of love he painstakingly rebuilt from the bottom up with his little brother and best friend, John.

Everybody who knew and loved "Bumpy" will sorely miss him. His family requests that he be remembered for the laughter, warmth, and delight he added into the life of others rather than with grief.
