CHARLOTTE, NC — The Charlotte‑Mecklenburg Police Department has arrested Sam’on Andrew Smith, 22, in connection with a fatal shooting that occurred Friday morning outside a northwest Charlotte bank.
Authorities said the victim, Ina Michelle Lang, 50, was shot and killed around 10:30 a.m. near a Bank of America on Callabridge Court. Multiple 911 calls reported gunfire, and officers arrived to find Lang deceased on the sidewalk near the ATM.
Witnesses told local media that shortly after the shots rang out, a suspicious person fled the scene in a yellow Dodge Charger. Police tracked a vehicle matching that description to a residence off Quail Street, near Charlotte Douglas International Airport. SWAT officers spent hours at the location, using a loudspeaker to call for the suspect to surrender.
Smith was taken into custody later that day, and investigators believe the Quail Street residence may be connected to the homicide, which occurred less than five miles away. Detectives continue to gather evidence, review surveillance footage, and interview witnesses as the case develops.
Lang’s death has left her family and community devastated. Friends and neighbors described her as a compassionate woman whose life was cut short in a senseless act of violence. Vigils and memorials are expected in the coming days as loved ones honor her memory.
The homicide has sparked concern across Charlotte, particularly in neighborhoods near the crime scene. Residents have voiced frustration over rising violence and emphasized the importance of cooperation between police and the public. Local leaders have urged anyone with information to assist investigators, stressing that community involvement is critical in ensuring justice.
Though the circumstances of her passing are tragic, Lang’s legacy will be defined by the love and support she gave to her family and community. Her death serves as a reminder of the fragility of life and the importance of standing together against violence.
As the investigation continues, Charlotte‑Mecklenburg Police remain committed to pursuing justice for Lang and her loved ones. For the community, the focus is on healing, honoring her memory, and ensuring that her story is not forgotten.
