A 19-year-old University of West Georgia student, Lyric Latrice Farley, was tragically shot and killed Saturday afternoon near a Douglasville discount store. Authorities have charged a 20-year-old man with her murder.
The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office reported deputies were called shortly after 1 p.m. on Feb. 7 to the area of Kings Highway and Central Church Road, behind a Dollar General in the Kings Corner area. Responding officers found Farley inside a vehicle in the parking lot, where she was pronounced dead from multiple gunshot wounds. Farley was a recent graduate of Carrollton High School and had been attending the University of West Georgia.
Investigators said that evidence, witness statements, and video footage indicated Farley and the suspect had met in the area following a disagreement, which escalated to the shooting.
Authorities identified the suspect as David Mark Anthony Powell, 20, of Douglasville. Powell was taken into custody without incident around 1:30 a.m. Sunday following a traffic stop on Interstate 20 near Highway 5. He is currently charged with murder and aggravated assault and is being held in the Douglas County Jail. Powell was expected to make his first appearance before a Douglas County Superior Court judge on Monday.
The sheriff’s office confirmed the investigation remains active, but there is no indication of an ongoing threat to the public.
